Indiana Drew a Line, and It Wasn’t on a Map.

Today, the voices of Hoosier voters prevailed over big government interference from D.C. I am incredibly proud of the 31 Indiana State Senators who rejected Trump’s plea to gerrymander our state’s congressional districts.

This vote was not about party loyalty or political advantage. It was about whether Indiana would allow outside pressure to override community integrity and the will of voters. Thankfully, a bipartisan majority of our Senate chose Indiana over Washington.

Redistricting is meant to follow the census and not the whims of national figures who seek to reshape states for a political power grab. Mid-decade map manipulation undermines public trust and sends a dangerous message that our elections should be manipulated rather than fair. Hoosiers know that redistricting should ensure fair and equal representation, and our senators listened.

What makes today’s decision especially meaningful is the pressure lawmakers faced to do otherwise, including some personal safety threats. Saying no was not the easy path. It required independence, courage, and a willingness to put constituents ahead of political consequences. That kind of leadership deserves recognition.

Indiana has a proud tradition of governing itself. We don’t need directives from D.C. to tell us how to define our communities or to dilute our voices. Our democracy works best when representation reflects people, not political insiders.

Today, the Indiana Senate affirmed a simple but essential principle: Our elections belong to individual Hoosiers. When elected officials honor that responsibility, our democracy is stronger for it.
